Study Abroad Photo and Video Contest

The Center for Global Engineering Engagement Study Abroad Photo Contest is your chance to visually share your unforgettable experience with the world!

We want you to be as creative as you can, however, here are a few pointers on what some of our best photo entries incorporated into their submissions from years past:

  • Show us your Penn State pride! Capture yourself and/or a Penn State friend wearing or displaying Penn State gear abroad. Look at previous winners who have used the Penn State flag in their photos!
  • Share breathtaking views, vibrant sunrises and sunsets, timeless architecture, city skylines, and all the other spectacular sights from your adventures abroad.
  • How have you experienced the culture around you? Have you interacted with any locals or attended any interesting events? How can you represent the local culture you’re experiencing in a photo?
  • What does it mean to be an engineering student abroad? Were there any projects that you were working on? Try to showcase how this study abroad was unique to you as a student whose focus is on studying engineering.
  • We cannot accept photos that include the following: alcohol, nudity, hand signs, or inappropriate facial expressions.

Eligibility Requirements

To take part in this contest you must be a Penn State College of Engineering student who participated in a short-term, semester, academic year, or summer study abroad program approved by Penn State. International internship, research, and service-learning experience participants are allowed to compete if the programs were Penn State registered and approved.

Note that this competition does not include vacation travel unless it was part of a study abroad experience. For example, a weekend trip while on a study abroad is eligible; a spring break trip with friends is not.

Select your best photos that fit into one of the following categories:

The World is Your Engineering Classroom

Highlight the purpose of study abroad: learning! Submit a picture of you on your host campus, working on an engineering-related project, or doing something educational while abroad (such as a study tour or field research).

Cultural Experience

Experiencing the culture of your host country is a key aspect of studying abroad. Show us how you embraced the culture by enjoying traditional cuisine, taking a local dance class, visiting a famous location, etc. Please include yourself and/or other students in the photos, not just scenery.

Penn State Abroad

Showcase the Nittany Lion spirit around the world. Feature yourself or a group of students wearing or displaying Penn State gear in an international setting.

  • Priority will be given to photos taken in your study abroad program as opposed to other travel during your experience
  • Extra consideration for photos that clearly show that you represent Penn State
  • Please avoid submitting photos of landscapes, animals, or buildings, UNLESS you or your fellow students are included in the shot
  • Share the highest quality photo file available
  • Each student can only win once (e.g. first place cannot also win second place)

How to Submit

Complete this form and upload a file for each submitted photo. Be prepared to provide the following information:

  1. Location of photograph (city/country)
  2. Name of your study abroad program
  3. Short (1-3 sentences) description of the photograph

  • Entries from travel outside of your host country are acceptable.
  • Photos must be your own. Do not submit another student’s photos or plagiarize.
  • Photo content must be appropriate. Do not submit photos that feature alcohol, drugs or related paraphernalia, or sexual content.
