Cultural understanding of diversity and inclusion

It is well established that students gain invaluable benefits from engaging in study abroad opportunities. Along with these benefits come adaptation to new environments and varied cultural understanding of diversity and inclusion. Students’ exposure to and understanding of customs, beliefs, laws, facilities, and social practices have been shaped by experiences in environments such as State College and are likely different than what they will experience abroad.

Often, doubts and obstacles related to cultural expectations in a new environment are important factors in the decision to study abroad. It is important to understand how personal identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, language, religion, and gender are viewed in a host country and how this may impact your experience abroad.

Join us during this session as we take a deep dive into to concepts of 1) cultural diversity, 2) culture shock, and 3) empower you to adequately navigate living, working, and traveling abroad to a new culture.

 * Please note that workshop attendees are welcome to attend all or a portion of the session based on availability and class schedules.

12:00-12:45 p.m. EDT
HESE: Design for a Brighter Future

The Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship program (HESE) will work hands on in groups to develop a solution to an international development challenge. In this session participants will move from problem identification to launching a company! This is a great introduction to what students do in the Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship program at Penn State.

A minimum of 10 students are required to run this workshop.

A Taste of the Como, Italy, Program: Tips on Improving Presentation Skills and Italian Pronunciation

Join faculty from the Como, Italy, Cross-cultural Engagement and Technical Presentation Program. Participants will be introduced communication techniques in two areas: 1) tips on how to improve your oral presentations and 2) Italian pronunciation made simple as you learn some fun facts about Italy’s culture and cuisine.

3:00-3:45 p.m. EDT
Promoting your Global Experience to Employers

Staff from Penn State’s Engineering Career Resources & Employer Relations will offer a presentation on how to incorporate global experiences into a professional job search. Following the presentation, students will have the opportunity to meet with Penn State Global Engineering Fellow alumni, who are currently working in industry, for an individual consultation on how to articulate their global experiences with employers.
