This year we are excited to offer our engineering partners and faculty the opportunity to virtually hold information sessions for their programs. All sessions are given in the eastern time zone.


9:30 a.m.
Jönköping University, Sweden

Join Sofia Tsivos from the School of Engineering at Jönköping University in Sweden will discuss the university’s environment that inspires research and multicultural networking for architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, and civil engineering students an. Third- and fourth-year students can study in either the fall or spring semester and various engineering majors can apply.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Minor, Maymester 2022, MGMT/ENGR 425 “New Venture Creation” with virtual study abroad to Croatia

Join Anne Hoag, from the Bellisario College of Communications and director of the Center for Penn State Student Entrepreneurship to learn more about “New Venture Creation” with virtual study abroad to Croatia. This course is open to students who have either completed ENGR 310 or with permission of instructor. It satisfies a requirement for the entrepreneurship and innovation minor (ENTI) and may count toward the Engineering Leadership minor or as a tech elective (See your advisor about this). Taught by Hoag and Jeanette Miller from the Smeal College of Business.

DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia

Join Tina Mangieri, Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) associate academic director, and Natalia Sáenz, DIS full-time faculty member in medical practice and policy and engineering. They will explore the DIS Stockholm biomedical engineering and sustainable environmental engineering programs. Why study abroad in Scandinavia? You will learn more about Sweden’s position on the cutting edge of technical innovation in bioenergy, smart grids, green building, waste and recycling, and water and forestry resource management. Sweden is renowned for using engineering principles to solve medical problems, and we will explore their advanced healthcare system, top-quality research facilities, and focus on design thinking.

University College Dublin, Ireland

Join Joanne Reilly, who will discuss why Ireland and Dublin are popular and attractive locations for United States students who are studying abroad. The session will also include information on University College Dublin, student supports and facilities such as housing, orientation activities, student clubs and societies, cultural and social programs, followed by a focus on the application process and academics. Third-year engineering students in architectural engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering have the opportunity to learn alongside local students during their study abroad experience.

Summers By Design Programs in SEDTAPP

Join Jessica Menold from the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs (SEDTAPP) to hear more about their faculty-led study abroad programs. Students will practice design with international collaborators in international environments and conduct design for global markets. Content is delivered by Penn State instructors and instructors at host universities with local and regional expertise, In addition, students will learn to function in cross-cultural engineering design teams, partnering with students from both the U.S. and other global institutions. While enrolled in the course, participants will also experience many cultural activities relevant to the part of the world in which they find themselves, including partaking in local cuisine, visiting historical landmarks, and interacting with local engineering companies. This is an ideal program for Penn State engineering students as it allows students the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program while still having time to return home to complete a summer engineering internship. Summer 2022 will be offering programs in Berlin, Germany; Navarro, Spain; and Singapore.

Architectural Engineering Rome Program, Faculty-Led Program

Join Thomas Boothby, professor of architectural engineering, to learn more about the Architectural Engineering Rome Summer Program. This program has customarily been an opportunity for architectural engineering students to complete architectural theory and design requirements in their curriculum. Due to curriculum changes and other changes in the study abroad landscape, this program will be re-invented for summer 2022. The courses will be less specific to architectural engineering and of more general interest. Beyond architectural engineering, other engineering disciplines (rising third-year students and above) may be eligible for this program.

Join Gael Noyes for a general overview of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) programs available to Penn State engineering students, what to expect on a program as far as housing, student life, activities, and excursions, as well as internship, volunteer project, and service-learning opportunities. She will also discuss scholarships and grants available.

University of Virginia, Valencia, Spain

Maya Drake and Alicia López Operé from the University of Virginia (UVA) will present on the Valencia, Spain program that is uniquely designed for engineering students. Learn how you can study abroad for a full semester in Valencia, Spain and fulfill your engineering requirements. Second- and third-year engineering students are welcome to apply. The UVA in Valencia program offers students engineering courses in English, taught by Spanish faculty. Through living with a host family, taking a required Spanish language course, and cultural activities and trips offered during the semester, students will improve their fluency in Spanish and experience firsthand the vibrant culture of Spain.

Join Matthias Weyer, dean of the School of Engineering at Pforzheim University to learn more about their fantastic six-week, nine-credit summer program. This information session will show you how you can be part of this amazing program. The Engineers Made in Germany (EMIG) program combines high quality education and a wide cultural program with various company visits and excursions to places in Germany and Europe. EMIG will run May 21, 2022 – July 2, 2022.

Join the National University of Singapore (NUS) for an information session on their semester exchange program. Singapore is a highly developed city-state, consisting of a mix of Chinese, Malay, and Indian culture, with English as an official language. Students will schedule their courses after arrival and NUS will help students to make the best housing arrangements possible.

Study European perspectives in engineering and innovation at one of France’s leading engineering schools during this four-week program. Experience innovative and interactive teaching, including site visits to businesses. Course topics include connected devices and smart services or management and innovation. Students will also become acquainted with French culture and study either beginning, intermediate, or advanced French.

Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship

Join John Gershenson, the director of the Penn State Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (HESE) program to learn about its work in East Africa. Through a series of five courses, HESE teams systematically advance ventures over multiple years with aspirations for large-scale commercialization and dissemination. Alongside the social enterprises, students work on original publishable research that strengthen ventures by ensuring they use an evidence-based and data-driven approach. The overarching goal is to deliver sustainable impact while preparing students for careers in social innovation and global sustainable development.

Cross-Cultural Engagement and Technical Presentation, Italy/Switzerland, Faculty-Led Summer Program

Participants of this program will collaborate with students from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland as they learn how to deliver effective technical presentations in a European setting and are introduced to Italian language, culture of northern Italy and Switzerland’s Italian language-speaking canton of Ticino. Students will stay in Como near the foot of the Alps in Italy’s stunning Lake District with frequent travel across the border to Switzerland. As another key feature of this offering, students will be provided the opportunity to enjoy academic and cultural engagement as they collaborate with university students from the Università della Svizzera italiana. This program includes explorations of nearby villages and cities where participants will learn about local economies, products, customs, history, and traditions. It is anticipated that this year’s program will travel overnight to Cremona, Italy. At this location, students will cultivate knowledge related to both culture and technical processes, such as cheese production, violin-making and culinary practices. This program will take place May 8-28, 2022.

Join Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring to learn about DAAD RISE, a summer internship for second- and third-year undergraduates in STEM fields. DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service) offers funded opportunities for select undergraduates to help graduate students in Germany on their doctoral research. No German language proficiency is required.
